🛠️ Tech stack & Development process at Loanboox

Technologies that we use

AngularTypeScriptC#.NET FrameworkMS-SQLAzureCloud

Can I choose the hardware? What is your coding setup (IDE, OS, Build server, Cloud provider)?

No, we work on Lenovo and Dell hardware on Windows. Our default IDEs are VS and VS Code, but about half the team prefers working in Rider. We use Azure DevOps for managing our work and build/deployment pipelines and we use Azure for hosting the platform.

Our software development process

How can I grow as a developer at your company (career paths and learning opportunities)?

In a start-up like Loanboox, developers are involved in every stage of software development, from shaping ideas, implementing and testing features to running the platform in the cloud. Therefore, you will have plenty of opportunity to learn every day.

On top of that, we also offer an education budget (time and money) that each employee can invest in areas where they want to deepen their expertise.

Do you prefer always writing your own software for everything or use frameworks if they fit?

Both. We use widely adopted frameworks like .NET, Angular or Ant Design but we also write some parts of the platform framework ourselves, for example a generic way to generate forms. It's always a trade-off between adding dependencies and the extra effort for writing our own code. We tend to do a bit more on our own, because it gives us more flexibility and reduces dependencies.

How diverse are your teams? What is the typical team size and structure?

We are present in 5 European countries, but all software development happens in Zürich. Our dev team and the entire company operate in English, but you might also overhear some conversations in French, Italian or German every now and then. The dev team that builds the platform has about 7 members including the CTO and the team leader. We work very closely with the product management team to focus on the right things to build. Check out our website to see our friendly faces 😊

Do you offer any helpful initiatives for parents with young children?

Parental leave of 2 weeks for new dads and 14 weeks for new mums (Swiss standard). Our work times are very flexible, which is an advantage not only for parents.

What is your remote work policy?

Under normal circumstances (outside COVID) we want to meet regularly in the office to work together and socialize. But it’s also no problem to work up to two days a week from home.

If you do Agile - how is your agile process & release cycle? How much coding vs meetings/planning?

Currently we're working in two-week sprints and release to production every two weeks. Our process is not set in stone but evolves over time. We try to keep meetings short and efficient. New initiatives are shaped in cross-functional squads, so developers get early insights and can influence what we’re going to build.

Do you have some in-house tech workshops or hackathons? Is there an educational budget?

The dev team has regular sessions to exchange on technical topics. This year we are also holding company-wide innovation days for the first time, which is a kind of hackathon where we work in interdisciplinary groups. And yes, there's an education budget (time and money) and we encourage developers to use it to sharpen their skills.

Can I work on my projects or open source for a part of time?

This is rare during working hours. If the project is for the purpose of education or a company-organized hackathon, then it's possible (see previous question).

📖 The Book Question™

What do I need to do to buy a 50$ educational book on company expense?

This is covered by the education budget, so if it's in line with your education goals, just order it. Either get the bill sent to the company or get the money back via the expenses process.
