Requirements
Must:
- Several years of experience in technical and personnel management of software or security teams
- In-depth knowledge of protocol design, cryptography, and applied security
- Experience in software engineering; practical experience with Rust is a plus
- Experience with threat modeling and security audits
- Familiarity with current research in cryptography and protocol security
- Bonus: experience in the field of formal verification
- Ability to define and implement the team roadmap in line with strategic goals
- Strong communication skills; able to convey complex technical issues to different target groups
- Independent, structured way of working with high quality standards
- Fluent written and spoken German and English
Responsibilities
- Support further development of the core of the Threema apps and contribute to protecting user privacy
- Lead a team of software and security engineers specializing in protocol design, cryptography, and product security:
- Provide coaching, career development, and regular performance feedback for team members
- Foster a positive, outcome-oriented team culture emphasizing collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Hire and onboard future team members
- Define and execute the technical roadmap for protocol design, implementation, and security hardening:
- Work closely with product and other engineering teams to align priorities, integrate security requirements, and provide protocol implementations
- Coordinate tasks, priorities, and deadlines within the team to ensure consistent delivery
- Report regularly on team progress to relevant stakeholders
- Lead security research efforts:
- Analyze emerging attack vectors, evaluate new cryptographic constructions, and assess protocol-level risks
- Perform threat modeling for product features and protocol designs with product and engineering teams
- Stay current with advances in cryptography and protocol research and translate findings into actionable engineering improvements
- Build relationships with the security research community to collaborate on protocol analysis and strengthen the companys security posture
